Next to death, the only certain thing in this world are wrinkles! No matter who you are or where you live, you’ll get wrinkles sooner or later. And if you smoke, stay outdoors most of the time, patronize tanning salons, and have parents with lots of wrinkles, you may get them sooner than you think!

The certainty of wrinkles is best expressed by American actress Estelle Getty who said, “Age doesn’t bring you wisdom. It brings you wrinkles.” Indeed, while they may appear at different ages in different people, wrinkles are here to stay because as we age, the skin ages as well. Young skin is elastic and can stretch and hold in moisture. As we grow old, the skin loses its elasticity and slowly dries up. With the loss of elastin and collagen, wrinkles set in.

“There’s not a magic age (like 40) when everyone suddenly gets wrinkles. Some people in their 20s have little wrinkles around their eyes (called “crow’s feet”) from squinting or spending too much time in the sun. Other people may be in their 50s or 60s before you can even see a wrinkle. This is usually because they have taken good care of their skin over the years and may have more sebum, the skin’s natural oil. They may also have ‘good genes’ – which means their family members don’t have many wrinkles. Eventually, however, everyone will have at least a few wrinkles. It’s a natural part of the aging process,” wrote kidshealth.org.

The role of heredity in developing wrinkles is best summed up by American actress Doris Day who said, “Wrinkles are hereditary. Parents get them from their children.” But don’t give up yet even if you have troublesome kids! There are several treatment options for wrinkles that can make a difference in your life. The trick is to find one that suits your needs, budget, and health. Here are some choices taken from MedicineNet.com:

Microdermabrasion – This refers to “sanding the skin” with a machine containing silica or aluminum crystals; many estheticians offer this service, usually in “packages” of six or seven sessions. Microdermabrasion does not change skin anatomy, though it may make the face feel smoother. Cosmetic products marketed as “home microdermabrasion” are just mild exfoliants, harmless but not likely to produce any meaningful change in wrinkles.

Dermabrasion – This is a true surgical procedure, often performed under general anesthesia. The treating physician uses a rotating instrument to sand the skin down. Depending a great deal on the skill and experience of the operator, dermabrasion can result in excellent improvement, but can also produce significant side effects, including scarring and permanent changes in skin color.

Laser resurfacing – Using instruments such as the carbon dioxide and erbium lasers, physicians can achieve results similar to those of dermabrasion with greater reliability and precision. The laser is passed several times over the area to be treated until the peel reaches the middle of the dermis, the skin’s second layer. This helps stimulate the body’s natural collagen synthesis (production), which plumps up sagging skin and wrinkles. Some doctors perform laser resurfacing under “conscious sedation,” in which the patient remains awake and receives intravenous medications to calm and ease pain. This sedation is combined with the application of topical anesthetic creams such as EMLA, as well as injections of local anesthetics like lidocaine. Procedures may need to be repeated to maximize improvement. Skin takes a long time to heal (weeks to months) after resurfacing. In addition, this procedure, like dermabrasion can cause permanent pigment changes and scarring.

Botox – Injection of botulinum toxin, the muscle poison, can paralyze muscles that produce the “frown lines” on the forehead, fine lines around the eyes, and other wrinkles. Improvement lasts several months and must be repeated to sustain improvement. Injected properly, Botox is quite safe: The muscle poison does not spread through the body to do damage elsewhere.

A safer alternative is Dermaxin, the skin cream that contains special ingredients to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by as much as 45 percent. Dermaxin repairs and rejuvenates the skin so you’ll look young, fresh, and wrinkle-free! It’s your best defense against the signs of aging.

Very few people are excited about wrinkles. After all who wants to look old and ugly? In a society that’s obsessed with beauty, wrinkles are perceived as unnatural or even abnormal. In an age that puts a premium on one’s physical appearance, the presence of wrinkles can be irritating or annoying to some.

Though it’s common knowledge that genetics, sun exposure, and a few bad habits play a great deal in how we develop wrinkles, our forefathers saw them in a different light. For them, the onset of wrinkles was not merely age-related but meant something else. For instance, early man believed that the number of vertical wrinkles in the forehead indicated the number of husbands a woman would have. Horizontal wrinkles, on the other hand, showed the number of children!

In The Encyclopedia of Superstitions, Folklore, and the Occult Sciences of the World, Cora Linn Daniels said intelligent people usually have wrinkles in the forehead that are parallel with the eyebrows. A forehead without any wrinkles, on the other hand, signifies a calm disposition, an easy life, few troubles, and excellent eyes.

Still, not everyone welcomed the prospect of developing wrinkles so early man devised ways to prevent them. In Superstitions: 10,000 You Really Need edited by William Carroll, people are discouraged from sleeping with the head raised high for this would cause wrinkles. Eating 10 or 12 dried prunes daily is another preventive measure. From the looks of it, none of these worked since modern man continues to be plagued by wrinkles.

Although science has yet to discover the fountain of youth, it has supplied us with products that come close to this dream. One that’s currently making waves is Dermaxin, a cream packed with four powerful wrinkle fighters that help rebuild beautiful skin. (See http://www.dermaxin.com for details.) Department stores are awash with beauty products that come short of promising us eternal youth. While few deliver what they promise, such products remain popular owing to society’s obsession with perfection.

For the few who see beyond the physical boundaries of this world, however, the thought of getting wrinkles isn’t frightening. Instead these lines signify one’s unique journey into life. Each wrinkle tells a story of one’s experiences in this world. It is a testament to a person’s character, abilities, and overall perspective. Think of wrinkles as trophies to the challenges you’ve faced, the goals you’ve reached, and the dreams you’ve achieved. As Amazing Kae wrote in www.43Things.Com:

“Wrinkles add character to your outward persona. They not only show you where you’ve been but where you’re going. I think the most charming part of growing old gracefully is being able to see the progression of life and character on the face. It’s like reading an antique map that leads to hidden treasure. Lines on the face give clues to one’s motivations, loves, sadness, challenges, and happiness. Wrinkles and laugh lines make people interesting and I look forward to having them.

“Beauty changes over time. I envy and admire the elderly I meet, and have noticed that behind their facial lines are interesting stories. I hope to have lots of wonderful life experiences on the inside that will give me good wrinkles on the outside. Our real responsibility is to grow old gracefully. To do so is the true hallmark of beauty since each line represents another milestone along the course of a full life,” she concluded.

Every year, Americans spend over $12 billion on cosmetics and another $20 billion on plastic surgery to hide the signs of aging. But the effects of most of these expensive creams and procedures are temporary and many have undesirable side effects.

While nothing can stop wrinkles that are a normal part of aging, you can slow down the process by following these simple measures. To preserve your youthful glow without emptying your wallet, here are some tips courtesy of Dermaxin, the safe and inexpensive alternative to costly cosmetic procedures:

Avoid the sun. The Earth’s depleted ozone layer allows more of the sun’s harmful rays to destroy your skin. If you don’t want to look like a shriveled raisin or prune, stay out of the sun between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. This is the time when 95 percent of the sun’s wrinkling rays reach the Earth. Avoid reflective surfaces like water, snow, sand, concrete, and other light-colored areas that intensify the sun’s rays.

Splurge on sunscreen. Don’t be stingy when putting sunscreen on your skin. It’s your best friend under the sun. But choose your friends carefully. Pick one with a high sun protection factor (SPF) that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Apply a generous amount 30 minutes before going out and reapply after swimming.

Accessorize. In addition to sunscreen, wear a wide-brimmed hat and a good pair of sunglasses. This will prevent your from squinting and getting crow’s feet. The right clothes can also protect you from the sun.

“People should look for loosely-fitted, unbleached, tightly woven fabrics. The tighter the weave, the more protective the garment. Washing clothes over and over improves UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) by drawing fabrics together during shrinkage. An easy way to assess protection is simply to hold the garment up to a window or lamp and see how much light comes through. The less the better,” according to TanSome.com.

Stop clowning around. Putting on a funny face can be good for a few laughs and will probably make you the life of the party. But repeated facial expressions like smiling, frowning, squinting or puckering your lips will give you more wrinkles and aggravate existing ones. Stop imitating Jim Carrey unless you’re being paid good money to do so!

“How do you know if you’re scrunching your face? Look at yourself in a mirror as you’re chatting on the telephone. Or try wearing a piece of cellophane tape over your forehead (just around the house, of course). Every time you furrow your brow, you’ll feel the tape start to crinkle,” said the editors of “The Doctors Book of Home Remedies.”

Maintain a healthy weight. Losing and gaining weight repeatedly stretches your skin. As you age, the skin becomes less elastic and fails to retract to its original size. This leads to wrinkles. Stop yo-yo dieting. Better still, keep off excess weight permanently with the right food and a good exercise program.

To keep your skin smooth, soft, and wrinkle-free, use Dermaxin, a safe and natural alternative to risky cosmetic procedures. Dermaxin rejuvenates and moisturizes the skin to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles to maximize your natural beauty. For details, go to http://www.dermaxin.com.
